Project DETOCS: Peer to Peer review session

On the 30th of January 2025, a Peer to Peer review session was organized online between the partners of the DETOCS project – DEcarbonising the TOurism Industry Post Covid-19 Support.

A good practice was presented by the project partner DETOCS of Municipality of Burgas. The other participants in this P2P session were the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (CIHEAM MAICh) from Greece, and the Regional Energy Agency of Pazardjik from Bulgaria. It was on the topic “Electric public transport of Burgas, Bulgaria”. The good practice presented the successful transition to The Electrification of Public Transport.

In the last 10 years, the city of Burgas completely transformed its public transport. Within an EU funded project, Burgas Municipality purchased 56 new buses standard EURO 6, designated bus rapid transit lines covering city’s entire territory, implemented priority traffic lights for public transport, traffic management system and electronic bus tickets.

With the support of EU funds, bank loans and own funds in the period 2019 – 2022, Burgas took a step to turn its public transport into 100% zero carbon.

In 2023, a public company of Burgas, which operates the public transport of the city, constructed a photovoltaic installation, connected to the bus charging stations. Thus Burgas becomes one of the most advanced and green cities when talking about public transport.

The event was followed by a discussion on topics related to investment costs, electrification of public transport and vehicles in Burgas, estimation of CO2 savings due to replacement of fossil-fuel-powered bus fleet by green busses, etc.

Mrs. Stoyanova, expert in Municipality of Burgas, mentioned also an Interreg event that would be hosted by the Municipality at the end of May and early June, 2025, where this particular good practice will be presented and invited the participants to join this upcoming event.
