Joint Thematic Guidebook within the frame of the DETOCS Project

Recognising tourism as one of Europe’s most energy-intensive economic activities, a Joint Thematic Guidebook “Decarbonisation of European tourism entities: Sustainable energy use and policy implications”, has been developed within the frame of the DETOCS project – DEcarbonising the TOurism Industry Post-Covid-19 Support, co-funded by the Interreg Europe programme. The goal of this project is to support the recovery of the EU tourism sector through the adoption of good practices in energy efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and the development of innovative low-carbon tourism models.

The thematic guidebook identifies a variety of sustainable energy solutions in use across tourism entities. It also represents identified examples of European good practices in the different participating regions and practical guidance for increasing energy independence and efficiency in tourism enterprises.

The guidebook is a key tool supporting regions in responding to the energy crisis and enabling a transition towards a greener, low-carbon tourism sector. Among the most common energy technologies are solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar thermal collectors, heat pumps, LED lighting, and biomass heating systems. Beyond technological solutions, the guidebook emphasises the importance of soft measures that complement technical innovations. The joint guidebook also identified key challenges, limitations and risks in hotels’ decarbonization, as well as lessons learnt from the hotels and other tourism entities studied.

By fostering innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing among European tourism stakeholders, these energy technologies contribute to a more resilient, competitive, and environmentally responsible tourism industry.
