First Online Training on Bio-Waste Management in January 2026 within the frame of the CirBioWaste Project
The CirBioWaste project is preparing to launch its first capacity-building activity, an online training session – OT1: “Models for an Efficient Bio-Waste Management at EU and Local Level”, scheduled for 16 January 2026. Co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, the project unites partners from Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Bulgaria under the coordination of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). With the support of 19 associated partners across six Mediterranean countries, CirBioWaste aims to drive the transition toward a circular and resource-efficient bioeconomy by transferring proven bio-waste management solutions and strengthening local governance frameworks.
The upcoming training event marks a key milestone in this collaborative effort. Its purpose is to build knowledge-sharing frameworks among local authorities, experts, and stakeholders, enabling them to co-design strategies and action plans tailored to their territories. After a common session in English, participants will be divided into break-out rooms, where each country will explore topics relevant to its national context in the local language.
In the Bulgarian breakout room, discussions will focus on concrete examples of bio-waste management practices and emerging tools designed to support municipalities and citizens. Participants in Bulgaria will examine the following topics:
- Bio-waste from green areas, including current practices and opportunities for improvement;
- The separate collection system for garden and green waste in Pazardzhik Municipality, serving as a local case study;
- Waste.bg – a mobile application that provides real-time information on the locations of recycling containers, supporting better waste-sorting behaviour;
- A “vending machine rewards” initiative, encouraging citizens to participate actively in recycling through incentive-based mechanisms;
- Circular economy and sustainable business models, highlighting how local systems can evolve toward greater resource efficiency.
By combining shared learning with country-specific sessions, the CirBioWaste training aims to strengthen regional collaboration and support the development of efficient, locally adaptable bio-waste management strategies across the Mediterranean area.
